Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) Programme
Comprehensive Post-Fracture Care & Osteoporosis Prevention in Melaka
At Oriental Melaka Straits Medical Centre (OMSMC), our Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) is a dedicated programme that helps patients recover after a fragility fracture and reduces the risk of future fractures. The programme is designed for adults — especially those aged 50 and above — who experience fractures from low-impact falls, which may indicate osteoporosis or poor bone strength.
What is the FLS Programme?
The FLS Programme provides coordinated and long-term care for patients after a fracture. Our goal is to ensure every patient receives proper bone health assessment, treatment, and follow-up to prevent secondary fractures.
Why the FLS Programme is Important?
- After a fragility fracture, the chance of having another fracture is significantly higher.
- Many patients do not receive osteoporosis screening or treatment after their first fracture.
- Early assessment and proper treatment greatly help improve mobility, strength, and quality of life.
Our FLS Programme Includes:
You will be taken care by a team consisting of:
- Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons
- Consultant Physician & Geriatrician
- Physiotherapists & Occupational Therapists
- Pharmacists
- FLS Nurse Coordinator
- Dietitians
- Home healthcare support
Our FLS team will arrange:
- Review of medical history and medications
- Fall-risk assessment
- Blood tests for bone health
- Bone Density Scan (DXA)
These tests help determine your risk of osteoporosis and future fractures.
Depending on your bone health, our doctors may recommend:
- Anti-osteoporosis medication
- Vitamin D and calcium supplementation
- Exercise programmes to strengthen bones and muscles
- Lifestyle and dietary advice to improve bone density
- Counselling for patients and caregivers
Our FLS nurse coordinator will:
- Monitor your progress
- Ensure medication adherence
- Arrange follow-up appointments
- Provide support for up to 12 months
- Coordinate home visits where necessary
This ongoing support helps reduce the risk of repeat fractures.
To lower your chances of future falls, the programme includes:
- Balance and mobility assessments
- Home safety education
- Strengthening exercises
- Lifestyle modifications
Who Should Join the FLS Programme?
You may benefit from the FLS Programme if you:
- Are 55 years or older
- Had a fracture from a minor fall (e.g., wrist, hip, spine, shoulder, pelvis)
- Have low bone density or suspected osteoporosis
- Have a history of repeated falls
